Avoid These 3 Things After Being Involved in a Car Accident, things you should not do after an auto accident

Getting into a car accident is jarring, and your judgment may be compromised. This is why it’s so important to calm yourself down and remember that there are certain protocols you should follow.

No matter how the other involved parties pressure you, here are some of the things you should avoid doing after an auto accident.

1) Flee the Scene

No matter the circumstances of the accident, you should never attempt to flee the scene. Even if it appears that none of the involved vehicles have sustained damage, you never know if someone has sustained an injury during the accident.

Keep in mind that leaving the scene of an auto accident is a felony in many states. So, from a moral and legal standpoint, always stop after an accident to check on the other drivers and formally address the incident.

2) Forget to Call the Police

Even if no one is hurt during an accident, you should still report it to the police. Some injuries may only become noticeable in the days following the incident and, if you don’t have a police report, you will be personally responsible for the medical fees.

Additionally, having an official police report of the accident will help determine fault and will also help if you need to file a claim with your insurance provider.

3) Admit Fault

Finally, you should never admit fault after an accident, even if you are convinced that it’s true. Car accidents unfold quickly, and there’s always a chance that it was caused by a circumstance that you were unaware of.

Rather than accepting fault or assigning guilt, leave this determination to the police. As they are an unbiased party, they will be the best judge of what happened.
