National Preparedness Month

This month is National Preparedness Month (NPM), an annual initiative sponsored by FEMA (the Federal Emergency Management Agency).  Every September, FEMA encourages Americans to develop an emergency action plan for their homes, workplaces, schools, and communities.

How to prepare for emergencies.

What is National Preparedness Month?

NPM is part of FEMA’s “Ready Campaign.” The Ready Campaign is an education outreach program that offers information to help prepare for and respond to emergencies.  NPM encourages the public to prepare for emergencies such as natural disasters and terrorist attacks.  This September, the theme for NPM is “Disasters Don’t Plan Ahead.  You Can.”

What Should I Do This Month?

In honor of NPM, gather your family and friends to make an emergency action plan.  Start by finding out what types of natural disasters are most likely to hit your area.  For example, if you are living in California, you should prepare for an earthquake.  If you are living in a state like Texas (the state with the most reported natural disasters), there are several natural disasters you need to be ready for.

Once you determine your risk, make an action plan.  Assume that in the case of an emergency, you will not be able to contact friends or family.  Establish a meeting spot where everyone should meet if there is a disaster.  Additionally, families should prepare a survival kit in case they become stranded.  Your kit should include things like water to last 3 days, non-perishable food items, and a change of clothes.

This September, you should also consider downloading FEMA’s mobile app.  You can get weather alerts, suggestions for being prepared, and tips for staying safe in different emergency situations.

Remember having the right insurance protection for your home, business, and family is an important part of being prepared.  Contact John Scott Insurance for the commercial and personal insurance coverage you need.
